Red Sox Looking to Sign 'One or Two' of These 5 Big Free Agents
The Boston Red Sox made a big splash on the trade market this month, acquiring top-tier starting pitcher Sonny Gray. Now, it's time for them to address their lineup, and look to the free agent market. They are insistent on bringing in a middle-of-the-order bat.
According to Jon Heyman of The New York Post, there are five names the BoSox are considering, and they're laser-focused on signing one or even two of them:
Kyle Schwarber, DH
The long-time Philadelphia Phillies slugger would be a sensational addition to Boston's lineup. They still regret letting him leave after the 2021 season, when they nabbed him at the trade deadline from the Washington Nationals. They let him slip away in free agency in the offseason, despite a .957 OPS that he cranked for Boston in his 41 games there.
The Phillies are intent on keeping him, so it would take a costly overpay to land the soon-to-be 33-year-old DH. But nobody has hit more home runs than Schwarbs in the last four seasons other than some guy named Aaron Judge.
Red Sox eyeing Pete Alonso as free agent addition if Bregman bolts
Pete Alonso, 1B
Although Triston Casas is hoping to be back early in the 2026 season after missing most of 2025 with a ruptured patellar tendon in his left knee, there are no guarantees. Additionally, Alonso would add a power bat to this lineup that they haven't had in years. Will they be prepared to hand out a $100M-$200M contract to land him?
Alex Bregman, 3B
This is the big one. The Red Sox would love to re-sign their own free agent, Bregman. In just one year in Beantown, he established himself as a team leader, and despite missing time to injury, performed well in his 114 games, with 18 homers and an .821 OPS. He should be priority #1 for the BoSox.
Kazuma Okamoto, 3B/1B/OF
The slugging Japanese third baseman would be a big get, particularly if they can't re-sign Bregman. But Okamoto can also play a little first, and perhaps even some outfield. How he'll perform in North America remains to be seen, but he has hit 30+ homers on six occasions in the NPB in Japan.
JT Realmuto, C/DH
Boston has shown interest in the veteran catcher, per Ken Rosenthal in The Athletic. However, he's another Phillies player that they are determined to re-sign, as they lack an internal replacement behind the plate, writes Rosenthal. Realmuto wouldn't quite be the impact middle-of-the-order bat that Boston seeks, but he would be an improvement behind the plate.
