TRADE: Astros Acquire Infielder From Rays

Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash talks on the phone in the dugout during 2026 game.

The Houston Astros acquired minor league infielder Raynel Delgado from the Tampa Bay Rays for cash considerations, with Delgado assigned to Triple-A Sugar Land.

The move is a direct response to two consecutive infield injuries that have thinned Houston's upper-level depth.

Nick Allen went on the injured list with a hamstring strain last week. Braden Shewmake followed with an adductor strain. Both are unavailable, leaving the Astros short on versatile infield options at the Triple-A level.

Delgado fills that gap immediately.

Eight Years in the Minors

Delgado's professional journey has taken him from Havana to Florida to eight minor league seasons without a single big league appearance.

He was drafted by Cleveland in the sixth round in 2018 out of Calvary Christian Academy in Florida, spent six seasons in the Guardians organization, topping out at Triple-A Columbus.

He then qualified for minor league free agency after 2024 when Cleveland did not add him to the 40-man, spent 2025 with Milwaukee's Triple-A affiliate in Nashville, slashing .281/.363/.378, signed with Tampa Bay on a non-roster invitation this past offseason, and is now with his fifth organization.

His 2026 numbers at Triple-A Durham are a .250 average with 14 doubles, three home runs, and 33 RBIs in 61 games, with league-average strikeout and walk rates and enough versatility to have played third base, shortstop, and second base this season.
