Insider: NY Mets Poised To Make Yet Another Huge Move After Landing Bichette & Robert Jr.
It's been a busy few days for the New York Mets, who went a long way towards addressing their offense for 2026 with the signing of free agent Bo Bichette, and the trade for outfielder Luis Robert Jr.
But wait, wasn't the starting rotation a big point of contention coming out of the 2025 season? The Mets finished 18th in starting pitching ERA, and 26th in WHIP.
According to Will Sammon of The Athletic, "The Mets remain in contact with the Milwaukee Brewers about Freddy Peralta, who is set to be a free agent after the season."
It wouldn't be a surprise to anyone if they tried to pull off a blockbuster pitching trade like that, as the top of their rotation is in great need heading into 2026.
Aside from rookie Nolan McLean (and there are never any sophomore guarantees for a hot shot rookie), the Mets badly need another headline arm for their staff.
Mets will have plenty of competition to land Freddy Peralta
But landing Peralta won't be easy, as the LA Dodgers are lurking according to a report this week, as are a number of other notable teams.
Peralta is heading into the final year of his contract at $8M. The Milwaukee Brewers, as they are wont to do, would love to capitalize now with the pitcher's value at an all-time high, and avoid the inevitability of him leaving in free agency to a huge offer that they cannot possibly match.
Last season, Peralta had a career best in wins (17) and ERA (2.70), while surpassing 200 strikeouts for the third straight year. He finished 5th in NL Cy Young balloting.
Over the last five years, Peralta has been one of the best starters in baseball, with a 3.30 ERA and 1.09 WHIP, while making at least 30 starts in three straight seasons.
Sammon suggests that if they can't land Peralta, the Mets could look to mid-tier free agents with such familiar faces as Chris Bassitt and Jose Quintana.
