MLB Trade Rumors: Top 3 Landing Spots For Red Sox Pitcher Sonny Gray
The Boston Red Sox are going to be sellers. The playoffs just isn't happening for them this year, and it's just a matter of who will bring back the best returns.
According to insider Robert Murray on Monday, Sonny Gray is one of two Boston Red Sox players that the team absolutely has to deal, as he'll be drawing plenty of interest. He's off to a terrific, All-Star like season, with an 8-1 record, a 3.12 ERA and a 55:17 strikeout to walk ratio.
Gray is in the final year of a three-year, $75 million deal, and does own a no-trade clause, but he'd likely be happy to make his way to a playoff contender.
Let's take a look at three top landing spots for the 14-year veteran Gray:
Chicago Cubs
This one stands out as the most obvious fit. Gray spent a good chunk of the second half of his career in the NL Central Division with the Cincinnati Reds and then the St. Louis Cardinals. He's familiar with the lay of the land there, and the Cubs are certainly aware of what he can do.
"I definitely think the Cubs are a great fit there for him," said Murray.
The Cubbies' rotation has been ravaged by injuries, with Cade Horton out for the year, and former ace Justin Steele not returning until after the All-Star break. Matthew Boyd appears about ready to return this week, but they could still use a huge boost from someone like Gray.
Atlanta Braves
Another team that has been linked to some pitching starting pitching moves, as they, too, have been pummeled by injuries on their starting staff. With Spencer Strider back on the IL for a while, Gray would get to step in right after Chris Sale at the top end of the Atlanta rotation. And he'd have a legitimate chance to find his way to a World Series run.
Milwaukee Brewers
The Brew Crew are also dreaming of a long postseason run, and adding Gray to a rotation that already boasts Jacob Misiorowski, Kyle Harrison and Brandon Woodruff would make Milwaukee an awfully tough team to beat in the NL playoffs. Milwaukee has been linked to all sorts of big names on the pitching trade market, including their own former ace, so they will be a team to keep an eye on.
