MLB Trade Rumors: Seiya Suzuki Heads To Seattle In Proposed Notable 1-for-1 Deal
It's not difficult to discern what the Seattle Mariners are looking for as we approach the trade deadline. The M's have had all sorts of trouble against southpaws this season, ranking 30th and dead last in OPS against LHP, at .631. They're also slugging a major league worst .334 against them, and are also at the bottom in batting average, at .212.
Yes, a big right-handed bat would certainly come in handy.
With that, Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report has proposed a straight-up, old-fashioned one-for-one baseball trade that would bring the Chicago Cubs' slugger Seiya Suzuki to the Pacific Northwest.
Seattle Mariners acquire:
- OF Seiya Suzuki
Chicago Cubs acquire:
- RHP Luis Castillo
Miller calls this a "buyer-to-buyer deal that figures to benefit both sides."
For the M's, they have a six-man rotation, and using their starting pitching depth to land the bat they need has been an idea that's been on the table all season.
Suzuki would bring his career .840 OPS against left-handers to Seattle, and is a free agent at season's end. He's already slugged 15 homers this year and has an .811 OPS. This season against LHP? How about a .927 OPS?
For the Cubs, they get a former ace-like arm to bolster their injury-riddled rotation. Castillo got off to a terrible start to the season, resulting a brief banishment to the bullpen. Back he's back and dealing now as a starter, and has a 2.72 ERA in his last seven appearances.
This would be a win-win for two teams that are buyers.
The Cubs are currently the top Wild Card team in the NL, while the M's are tied for the third Wild Card spot in the AL.
