Blue Jays DFA Reliever One Day After Big League Promotion

He was called up and activated on Sunday, making his debut with the team with 2.2 innings bailing out starter Eric Lauer. But reliever Austin Voth's time with the Toronto Blue Jays lasted just one day, as he's been designated for assignment.

Voth, an eight-year veteran, was released by the Chicago White Sox on March 20, leaving the Blue Jays to nab him and sign him to a minor-league contract. He allowed three hits and one run in his 2.2 innings of work against the ChiSox, but his days with the big club have come to an end after 24 hours, in favor of left-hander Josh Fleming.

The 29-year-old southpaw has been selected to the Jays' roster. He last pitched in the majors in 2024 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and for his five-year career, Fleming has a 4.77 ERA. He doesn't bring the heat, averaging only 5.7 strikeouts per nine innings across 254.2 innings total. Rather, he's a sinkerballer who induces ground balls while throwing in the low-90s.

He relies heavily on a three-pitch mix: a sinker (38-45% usage), a changeup (30%), and a cutter (25%).

He's likely to serve as a multi-inning option out of the Jays' bullpen, mostly in lower-leverage spots, and undoubtedly when left-handed batters are due up.

The Toronto bullpen has struggled this season with a 4.67 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP, and the troubles have been exacerbated by the multitude of injuries to their starting rotation.
