More Terrible Injury News for Blue Jays on Alejandro Kirk's Condition
It was a brutal blow to the Toronto Blue Jays to lose starting catcher Alejandro Kirk on Friday. But the news got even worse on Monday when it was revealed that Kirk will be undergoing surgery on his fractured and dislocated left thumb on Tuesday.

The injury occured when Kirk took a foul tip off his gloved hand.
And while there is no ligament damage, the Blue Jays could be without Captain Kirk for a month or even longer due to the surgery.
Keegan Matheson of mlb.com opined that "Outside of Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Kirk may be the player the Blue Jays could least afford to lose."
The effects were seen immediately when backup catcher Tyler Heineman had a dreadful game on defense and on the basepaths on Saturday, leading to another Jays loss.
Blue Jays have huge void to fill as Kirk to undergo surgery
“Kirky, around the game, is just an underrated player,” manager John Schneider said. “What he can do on both sides of the ball is pretty unique. Whether it’s contact, home runs, catching, blocking and throwing. One of Kirky’s superpowers is that he’s so steady. That is hard to do when you’re back there every day.”
It will be a huge void for the already banged-up and slumping Blue Jays to fill.
In addition to Heineman, who simply has to play better than he did this weekend, prospect Brandon Valenzuela will get time behind the plate in Kirk's absence. He's got "a bright future" according to Schneider, but the 25-year-old has a lot to learn, and has just one major league game to his credit.
Kirk joins a ridiculously long list of players who have made their way to the Toronto injured list, including starters Trey Yesavage, José Berríos, Shane Bieber, and most recently, Cody Ponce. We can also add Addison Barger's name to the walking wounded, after he left Sunday's game with bilateral ankle soreness.
Then, to add insult to injury, the Jays are now facing the LA Dodgers for three games—the team that heartbreakingly stole the World Series from Toronto's grasp last fall.
