Blue Jays Add Former Top Prospect, 30-HR Hitter to Roster

With the news coming out on Sunday that George Springer was officially going on the injured list with his fractured toe suffered on Saturday, they have had to make moves to fill the DH spot. The biggest one is the call-up from Triple-A of former top slugging prospect Eloy Jimenez.

The talk of Jimenez's impending addition to the team began immediately after Springer's diagnosis became public on Saturday evening. He has been instantly inserted into the Jays' lineup on Sunday, and is batting 7th.

Jimenez was the Chicago White Sox's No. 1 prospect and the 3rd-ranked prospect in all of MLB when he made his debut in 2019. He crushed 31 homers in that rookie campaign and finished 4th in Rookie of the Year balloting. But he lost his mojo considerably since then. He wasn't able to land a gig in the majors in 2025.

The last time Jimenez, now 29, played in MLB was the 2024 season, when he split his time between the Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles. He managed just six home runs and a .626 OPS in 349 plate appearances.

He was picked up late last season by the Jays for a minor league look-see, and so far in 2026 with Buffalo, he was off to a strong start but has slowed lately. He was batting .257 with a homer and five RBIs in 11 games, with a .744 OPS.

Overall, Jimenez has a .269 career average in the bigs, with a .780 OPS, and 95 home runs.

As for the veteran Springer, depending on the severity of the big toe fracture, it could be anything from two weeks in the best-case scenario to 12 weeks in an absolute worst-case scenario. This, according to noted sports doctor Jesse Morse.

Generally, without knowing the exact details, Morse is 'guesstimating' a two-to-six-week recovery time.
