Marlins Lose Starting Pitcher For Season With Injury

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Adam Mazur pitches during 2025 game.

The Miami Marlins have suffered an early blow to their pitching depth before the 2026 season even begins.

Right-handed pitcher Adam Mazur will miss the entire year after undergoing elbow surgery, the team confirmed.

The 24-year-old underwent UCL reconstruction with an internal brace, a hybrid procedure often associated with Tommy John surgery, and is expected to be sidelined for roughly 13 to 14 months.

Mazur recently reported elbow discomfort during spring training and was quickly evaluated by renowned surgeon Dr. Keith Meister. After the diagnosis, the decision was made to proceed with surgery, ending any chance the young pitcher had of contributing to the Marlins’ pitching staff in 2026.

Adam Mazur Injury Hits Marlins Rotation Depth

The loss of Adam Mazur may not immediately alter the Miami Marlins rotation, but it significantly impacts the team’s depth.

Mazur entered camp as one of the organization’s primary backup options behind a projected rotation that includes Sandy Alcantara, Eury Perez, Chris Paddack, Max Meyer, and Braxton Garrett.

Mazur split the 2025 season between Triple-A Jacksonville and the majors. At Triple-A, he logged 107.1 innings with a 4.36 ERA, while also making six MLB starts with a 4.80 ERA in Miami.

Though his strikeout numbers at the major league level were modest, the organization viewed him as a potential call-up option if injuries struck the rotation.

The right-hander originally joined the Marlins in a 2024 trade with the San Diego Padres that also brought in infielder Graham Pauley and pitching prospect Robby Snelling.

A second-round pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, Mazur has shown flashes of promise throughout the minor leagues but was still working to establish himself as a consistent major league contributor.

Marlins Rotation Depth Will Be Tested in 2026

Mazur’s injury comes at an inconvenient time for Miami after the front office moved several pitchers earlier this offseason.

The club dealt Edward Cabrera to the Chicago Cubs and Ryan Weathers to the New York Yankees, decisions that relied heavily on the organization’s pitching depth to absorb potential setbacks.

With Mazur now unavailable, the Marlins will likely lean more heavily on swingman options such as Janson Junk and additional depth arms already on the 40-man roster.

Meanwhile, highly regarded pitching prospects like Robby Snelling and Thomas White could eventually emerge as call-up candidates if injuries pile up during the season.

While Mazur is expected to make a full recovery, the timeline means he will likely miss most, if not all, of the 2027 season’s early months as well.
