Toronto Blue Jays Sign Free Agent Reliever

Chicago White Sox pitcher Caleb Freeman pitches during 2024 game.

The Toronto Blue Jays added pitching depth, signing right-handed reliever Caleb Freeman to a minor league contract.

The 28-year-old has already been assigned to Double-A New Hampshire as he joins the organization after spending his entire professional career in the Chicago White Sox system.

Blue Jays Add Caleb Freeman as Bullpen Depth

It's a low-risk move for the Blue Jays as they continue stacking organizational pitching options.

Freeman made his major league debut in 2025, appearing in five games for the White Sox. Across 3.1 innings, he allowed two earned runs on five hits while striking out three batters.

Originally drafted by Chicago in the 15th round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of Texas Tech, Freeman worked his way through the minor leagues before finally reaching the big leagues.

His power arsenal includes a mid-90s fastball that can reach 97 mph, complemented by a slider and curveball that have helped him generate strong strikeout rates in the minors.

Caleb Freeman Looking to Rebuild Value in Toronto System

While Freeman’s stuff has always intrigued scouts, command has been the biggest challenge throughout his career.

During the 2022 and 2023 minor league seasons, he walked roughly 18.5 percent of opposing hitters, far above the typical MLB average for relievers. He began tightening things up in 2024, improving his walk rate while striking out nearly 29 percent of hitters and posting a 3.92 ERA at Double-A.

Freeman even got off to a dominant start in 2025 at the minor league level, recording a 1.35 ERA with a 33.3 percent strikeout rate across his first 13.1 innings, which earned him a promotion to Chicago’s major league roster.

The path to the majors with Toronto will not be easy. The Blue Jays currently have a crowded pitching staff that could see several starting pitchers shift into bullpen roles, leaving limited opportunities early in the season.

Still, injuries and roster movement over a long campaign often create openings, and Freeman now gets a chance to prove he can contribute if the opportunity arises.
