Report: Red Sox Prepared To Make 'Big Money' Offer to Alex Bregman
There's been a lot of beating around the bush and hemming and hawing this offseason when it comes to the Boston Red Sox and their top free agent priority, Alex Bregman. But now, according to ESPN insider Buster Olney, the Red Sox are poised to step up their efforts.
The Boston Red Sox want Bregman and have signaled a willingness to pay him big money -- perhaps something in the range of what the Tigers offered him last spring, a six-year, $171.5 million deal.
Bregman's market has changed due to Okamoto signing in Toronto
Olney's ESPN colleague Jesse Rogers feels the Red Sox have been able to get back into a serious posture in the Bregman bidding since the Toronto Blue Jays went out and signed Japanese star third baseman Kazuma Okamoto.
Many believe the two sides -- Boston and Bregman -- need each other, given the leadership and production he supplied for the Red Sox last season. But free agents always want more than one serious suitor, so one executive put it this way: 'If it was down to Toronto and Arizona before, maybe it's now Boston or Arizona.'
We've heard varying reports out of Phoenix regarding Bregman, with some feeling it's as good as done that he'll head to the Diamondbacks, while others feel the only way Arizona can bring him in is if they first trade second baseman Ketel Marte.
As for the Red Sox, Bregman posted an .821 OPS for them in 2025, his first season there. He was limited to 114 games due to injury, but still hit 18 homers with a .360 on-base pct, while quickly establishing himself as a valuable team leader. The BoSox would have a huge void to fill if they can't re-sign him.
