Mets Claim Pitcher Off Waivers From Braves After Dominating Triple-A This Season

Atlanta Braves pitcher Wander Suero pitches during 2025 game.

The New York Mets dipped into the waiver wire, adding veteran right-hander Wander Suero from the Atlanta Braves in hopes of shoring up their bullpen ahead of the stretch run.

Suero, who turns 34 later this month, has bounced around the majors since debuting with the Washington Nationals in 2018, with stops in Los Angeles, Houston, and Atlanta along the way.

Mets Claim Wander Suero to Bolster Bullpen Depth

Suero struggled mightily in limited action with the Braves this season, allowing eight runs in just 6.1 innings (11.37 ERA). Still, his strong Triple-A showing offers a reason for optimism.

With the Gwinnett Stripers, he posted a sparkling 1.35 ERA, striking out 59 in 46.2 innings while holding hitters to a .200 batting average. His arsenal remains cutter-heavy, supplemented by a changeup and a curveball, giving the Mets a potential middle-inning option when starters can’t go deep.

For the Mets, who are still in the thick of the NL East race behind the Philadelphia Phillies, the move is low-cost with modest upside. Suero’s postseason experience, including pitching for the Nationals during their 2019 World Series run, adds value to a taxed relief corps.

Whether he can translate his Triple-A dominance to meaningful big-league innings remains to be seen.
