Astros To Sign 1 of 3 Recently DFA'd Outfielders

The Houston Astros did not have the most eventful trade deadline, aside from getting Daulton Varsho from the Toronto Blue Jays, but they aren't finished trying to make moves just yet, according to the latest report. They're still looking to add a right-handed hitting outfielder. And three targets are out there for them.

Chandler Rome writes in The Athletic that three recently released outfielders could be a fit. He reports that Rob Refsnyder and Austin Hays are "of particular interest" to Houston, and he then proposed that Jorge Soler, just released a couple of days ago by the LA Angels, should also be on their radar. 

Refsnyder, who has generally hit lefties quite well in his career, struggled big-time with the Seattle Mariners this season, posting a .140/.211/.254 slash line with just four home runs in 129 plate appearances with a .506 OPS against southpaws. Surprising, as he has a career .787 OPS against LHP. And in 2025 with Boston, he had a .959 OPS. 

Hays was recently cut loose by the Chicago White Sox after an injury-riddled run with the team this season. He has a career .816 OPS against lefties. He is healthy at this point, and was just activated from the IL by the ChiSox this week, then immediately released. 

As for Soler, sticking him in the outfield is a sketchy proposition, and the Astros already have the league's best hitter, Yordan Alvarez, owning the DH slot, so finding room for Soler might be more difficult. Either one of them could slot into left field on occasion, but it's not ideal, by any means.
