Atlanta Braves Release Starting Pitcher After Just Two Starts

Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Cal Quantrill pitches during 2025 game.

The Atlanta Braves have released right-hander Cal Quantrill just two weeks after claiming him off waivers from the Miami Marlins

The move ends a brief and rocky stint in Atlanta, where Quantrill gave up 12 earned runs across eight innings, finishing with a 13.50 ERA in two starts.

Braves Cut Ties With Cal Quantrill After Two Rough Starts

The Braves had hoped Quantrill could stabilize the back end of their rotation, but his struggles against the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies made the decision inevitable. Atlanta absorbed the remaining $715,000 on his $3.5 million salary when they claimed him in August, but the gamble never paid off.

This release was part of a roster shuffle that saw Jurickson Profar reinstated from the paternity list, Daysbel Hernandez recalled, and Luke Williams designated for assignment.

For Quantrill, 2025 has been a season to forget. Between Miami and Atlanta, he posted a 6.04 ERA and a 4-12 record across 26 starts, though he did record the first immaculate inning of the season back in May with the Tampa Bay Rays

Once viewed as a steady mid-rotation arm after strong years with Cleveland in 2021 and 2022, Quantrill has struggled to regain that form. Now a free agent, the 30-year-old may have to settle for a minor-league deal as he looks for a third team this year.
