MLB Rumors: Mets Linked To Trade For Star Starting Pitcher This Offseason

Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Freddy Peralta reacts during 2025 game.

Milwaukee Brewers ace Freddy Peralta could actually become the biggest name on the trade market this offseason.

The Brewers have a history of moving stars before their big paydays (Josh Hader, Corbin Burnes, and Devin Williams among them), and Peralta could be next. He enters his final guaranteed season in 2026, and while he’s beloved in the clubhouse, Milwaukee president of baseball operations Matt Arnold faces a choice: extend him, hold onto him, or cash in now.

Mets Emerging as a Landing Spot

Peralta is enjoying a career-best season, posting a 16-6 record with a 2.69 ERA and 185 strikeouts across 163.2 innings. That kind of production ensures his market will be massive, with nearly every contender checking in.

One obvious fit? The New York Mets

With David Stearns, Milwaukee’s former executive, running their front office and a glaring need for frontline pitching, it’s easy to imagine them making a push. Given New York’s recent second-half struggles, adding a difference-maker like Peralta could be the move that reshapes their rotation.

Extension Talks Still Looming

Despite outside speculation, there’s still a chance Milwaukee keeps Peralta. He reportedly sought an extension earlier this year, but no deal was reached. At age 29, and set to turn 30 before free agency in 2026, this will be his first major payday.

With frontline starters now commanding $25+ million annually, Peralta has little reason to take a discount. If the Brewers aren’t prepared to pay, history suggests they could move him, and the Mets, with prospects to deal and urgency to win, look like one of the top destinations.
