Dodgers DFA Former All-Star Closer

It's been a long fall from grace. After earning a berth on the National League All-Star Team in 2023, posting 37 saves that season with 11.5 strikeouts per nine innings for the Cincinnati Reds, Alexis Diaz has been designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

LA acquired Diaz from the Reds back in May, and had a 4.15 ERA across 8.1 innings with the Dodgers since making his team debut on July 22. His last outing with the Dodgers was back on Aug. 17th, after which he was sent down to the minors.

Diaz posted an 8.10 ERA at Triple-A, and 7.80 ERA in majors this year

In 10 innings with Oklahoma City at AAA, he struggled mightily, with eight walks and nine runs allowed, for an 8.10 ERA.

Díaz will now go on waivers. If he goes unclaimed, he will have the option to reject a Minor League assignment with the Dodgers, and choose instead to become a free agent. He would not be eligible to pitch in the playoffs for any new team, however, as it's past the Aug. 31 deadline for that. It's unlikely, however, with the way he's pitched this season, that any team would be throwing him out there in a postseason game.

Diaz, 28, is the younger brother of Mets' All-Star closer Edwin Diaz. Alexis has a career 3.29 ERA in 205 appearances. But he has posted a 7.80 ERA in 15 outings this year between the Reds and Dodgers.
