Baltimore Orioles Claim Pitcher Off Waivers From Astros

Houston Astros pitcher Shawn Dubin walks off the field during 2025 game.

The Baltimore Orioles have added another arm to their constantly changing bullpen, claiming right-hander Shawn Dubin off waivers from the Houston Astros

The 29-year-old reliever, designated for assignment last week after struggling in August, now gets a fresh start with a club looking toward 2026.

Orioles Add to Their Bullpen Via Waiver Wire.

Dubin opened the year strong, posting a 1.33 ERA across his first 18 outings before a forearm injury derailed his season. Since returning on August 12, he allowed 13 runs in just 5.1 innings, pushing his ERA to 5.61 over 23 appearances.

Despite the rough patch, Baltimore sees value in Dubin’s deep six-pitch arsenal and ability to generate ground balls. With the Orioles’ bullpen stripped by trades and injuries, including closer Félix Bautista undergoing shoulder surgery, Dubin is a low-risk, controllable option. He’s under team control for five more seasons if he can stick on the roster.

To make room for Dubin, Baltimore moved injured righty Scott Blewett to the 60-day IL and designated Matt Bowman for assignment. Interim manager Tony Mansolino said Dubin could see leverage or length opportunities depending on performance, while Roansy Contreras is also expected to join the roster Wednesday in either a starting or bulk relief role.
