Crushing News for Rangers As Cy Young Contender Done for the Season

The Texas Rangers have fallen off the pace of late, now 4.5 games back of a Wild Card spot. But things just got a whole lot more difficult, as they've received the crushing news that Cy Young contender Nate Eovaldi, having a career year, is done for the season.

It's a rotator cuff strain that will knock him out, and the Rangers' pitching staff takes a devastating blow. There was no hint of this during his last outing, when he tossed seven innings of one-run, four-hit ball with nine strikeouts against the Cleveland Guardians last Friday. However, he said he had felt some soreness over the weekend, which led to an MRI, and the tough diagnosis.

Eovaldi's season ends with the best ERA in baseball at 1.73. Yes, better than Tarik Skubal and Paul Skenes.

The 35-year-old finishes with an 11-3 record, a 0.85 WHIP and a 129:21 strikeout to walk ratio.

His incredible stats don't stop there. Eovaldi allowed one or no earned runs in 13 of 14 starts earlier this year, joining Bob Gibson during his legendary 1968 season as the only starter to accomplish that. And his 1.38 ERA after his first 19 starts was 5th best of all-time.

Eovaldi also missed a month back in May with a triceps injury.

The Rangers have also lost second baseman Marcus Semien for the season as well as Evan Carter.
