Toronto Blue Jays Bring Back Familiar Name Via Free Agency

Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Ryan Borucki pitches during 2025 game.

The Toronto Blue Jays have reunited with a familiar face, signing Ryan Borucki to a minor-league deal and assigning him to Triple-A Buffalo.

The 31-year-old left-hander, originally drafted by the Jays in 2012, returns to the organization where he made his MLB debut back in 2018.

Blue Jays Reunite With Pitcher They Drafted 13 Years Ago

Borucki was released by the Pittsburgh Pirates earlier this month after posting a 5.28 ERA across 35 appearances this season. While his overall numbers have dipped over the last two years, he remains tough on left-handed hitters and gives Toronto another bullpen option heading into the final stretch of the season.

Because he signed before September 1, Borucki is postseason-eligible if the Blue Jays decide to call him up.

After beginning his career as a starter with Toronto, injuries shifted him into a relief role where he found flashes of success, including a strong 2023 campaign with Pittsburgh. Across his eight big-league seasons with the Jays, Seattle Mariners, and Pirates, he owns a 15-12 record with a 4.36 ERA in 183 games.
