Stroman's final act in the Bronx came Thursday night, when he surrendered six hits and four earned runs in five innings, bringing his ERA this season to 6.23 in nine starts, with a 1.53 WHIP.
It hasn't been a great year for Stroman, from start to finish. He came into spring training insisting he would refuse to go to the bullpen, repeating over and over again, "I'm a starter. I'm a starter," even though the Yanks had five men ahead of him in the rotation.
Eventually, injuries took their toll, with Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil going down for the long term, opening up a spot for Stroman to open the season in the rotation. But after three ugly starts that left him with an 11.75 ERA, knee inflammation knocked him out of the lineup for 2 1/2 months.
He returned at the end of June with four decent starts, before surrendering eight earned runs in 8.2 innings over his last two outings. That was the final straw.
Manager Aaron Boone praised Stroman as a true pro, but said that it was time to let the kids play. “We feel like (Will) Warren and (Cam) Schlittler are ready to be in the rotation full-time,” Boone said.
The Yankees will have to pay Stroman $5.7 million not to pitch for them for the rest of the season. Meanwhile, he'll be free to find himself a new landing spot, and any signing team will only have to offer him the prorated share of the minimum MLB contract of $760,000 (works out to about $230,000).
Stroman has also pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays, the New York Mets and the Chicago Cubs.
