MLB Rumors: Yankees Making Calls For Help At One Specific Position

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone watches on before 2025 game.

With Jazz Chisholm Jr. stuck at third base and DJ LeMahieu continuing to struggle, the New York Yankees are actively working the phones in search of a true third baseman ahead of the July 31 MLB trade deadline

Yankees Seek Third Base Upgrade as Jazz Chisholm Plays Out of Position

Chisholm, who owns a .829 OPS through 56 games, was promised the second base job entering the season, but has been relegated to the hot corner since early June. While he's made the most of it offensively, he’s been vocal about preferring to return to his natural position.

Yankees Linked to McMahon, Castro, Jung as Trade Options

According to Jon Heyman, the Yankees have already contacted the Colorado Rockies about Ryan McMahon, one of the league’s top defensive third basemen. Willi Castro of the Minnesota Twins is another intriguing option; his versatility, switch-hitting, and expiring contract make him a realistic rental.

Meanwhile, Josh Jung of the Texas Rangers is generating buzz as a potential buy-low candidate, with Yankees podcast host Jake Storiale floating him as a possible long-term solution if Texas is willing to move on.

LeMahieu’s Contract Creates Roster Jam

At the heart of the issue is LeMahieu, who hasn’t posted league-average offense since 2022 and is still owed money through 2026. A trade for a third baseman would push him to the bench or off the roster entirely.

Internal options are thin, with Oswald Peraza underwhelming and Oswaldo Cabrera out for the season. That leaves the Yankees eyeing outside help to unlock a more natural alignment: Chisholm back at second, a steady hand at third, and a shot at a deeper playoff run.
