Atlanta Braves Sign Former Diamondbacks Pitcher

Atlanta Braves pitcher Kyle Nelson pitches during 2025 game.

The Atlanta Braves have added bullpen depth, signing left-hander Kyle Nelson to a minor-league contract as they continue to stockpile pitching options heading into the season.

Nelson, 29, joins the organization after four seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he logged meaningful big-league innings and even appeared on the club’s 2023 postseason roster.

Braves Add Experienced Lefty Kyle Nelson

Nelson brings 136 games of major-league experience, posting a career 4.36 ERA with 115 strikeouts across 116 innings.

A former 15th-round pick out of UC Santa Barbara, he carved out a role as a dependable middle reliever, leaning heavily on a sharp slider that he throws more than half the time to complement a low-90s fastball.

After undergoing thoracic outlet surgery in 2024, Nelson struggled to regain his form in 2025. He appeared in just three big-league games for Arizona and posted a 9.09 ERA over 42 appearances at Triple-A Reno.

Kyle Nelson Gives Braves Bullpen Depth at Gwinnett

The Braves signed Nelson on Feb. 25, and he is expected to provide experienced relief depth at Triple-A Gwinnett. With injuries frequently shaking up bullpens throughout a season, adding a veteran lefty with postseason experience is a low-risk move that could pay off if he rediscovers his pre-surgery effectiveness.

If Nelson shows improved command and regains the sharpness on his slider, he could find himself back in the majors sooner rather than later.
