Blue Jays Expected to Cut Former Top Prospect
Jimenez entered camp fighting for a reserve infield job, but the competition around him has tightened. According to Blue Jays insider Keegan Matheson, Toronto is comfortable using Davis Schneider as a backup option while also exploring other roster combinations that would leave Jimenez without a spot on the 26-man roster.
Leo Jimenez Facing Roster Crunch With Blue Jays
Jimenez has long been viewed as a strong defensive infielder, but his offensive production has not translated consistently to the major leagues. In limited MLB action last season, he managed just two hits in 29 at-bats, leaving him with a .301 OPS in that small sample.
Over 242 career plate appearances, Jimenez owns a .635 OPS, numbers that have made it difficult for him to secure a permanent role on a team that already has several established infield options.

The former international signing joined the organization in 2017 and was once considered one of the club’s more promising young infielders.
Because Jimenez is out of options, the Blue Jays cannot send him to the minors without first exposing him to waivers, creating a real possibility that another team would claim the young infielder.
World Baseball Classic Could Influence Final Decision
Jimenez’s participation with Team Panama in the World Baseball Classic has added another layer to the situation.
The Blue Jays had hoped those high-intensity games would help him rediscover the rhythm he showed earlier in his career, but he went 0-for-5 in a backup infield role for Panama in the WBC.
Toronto still believes he has the tools to contribute, particularly with his defense up the middle, but the club also has alternatives pushing for the same roster spot.
