MLB Trade Rumors: 3 Teams Competing For Athletics' Mason Miller

Athletics closer Mason Miller pitches during 2025 game.

The Athletics are listening to offers on star closer Mason Miller, and three major-market contenders, the New York Yankees, New York Mets, and Philadelphia Phillies, are among the teams showing interest, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic

Miller, one of baseball’s most dominant young relievers, is under team control through the 2029 season, making him one of the most coveted bullpen arms ahead of Thursday’s MLB trade deadline.

Athletics Seek Top Prospect Returns

The Athletics' asking price for Miller is steep, and it’s easy to see why. The 26-year-old flamethrower owns a 3.76 ERA with 59 strikeouts in 38.1 innings this season and has already notched 20 saves. With a fastball that regularly reaches 104 mph and a career strikeout percentage near 40%, Miller has quickly become one of the league’s most feared closers.

The Athletics have reportedly asked the Phillies for their top pitching prospect, Andrew Painter, in a potential deal. However, Philadelphia has made it clear Painter is untouchable, which could take them out of the running. Similarly, the Yankees are said to be "more focused on adding pitching than subtracting it" and may be hesitant to part with the MLB-ready arms the Athletics are seeking.

Mets and Other Contenders Weigh Options

The Mets remain in the mix even after recently acquiring relievers Tyler Rogers and Gregory Soto. Pairing Miller with Edwin Díaz would create arguably the most dominant late-game duo in baseball, but New York must decide whether the prospect capital required would be worth the move.

While a deal for Miller is far from guaranteed, his name remains at the forefront of deadline speculation. The A’s could hold onto him until they receive an overwhelming offer, or capitalize now on a trade market hungry for elite bullpen help.
