MLB Trade Rumors: Guardians Aggressively Trying to Move Out Two Star Players

Cleveland Guardians manager Stephen Vogt walks onto the field during 2025 game.

The Cleveland Guardians are looking at some big trades ahead of Thursday's MLB trade deadline, with reports confirming they are shopping All-Star outfielder Steven Kwan and former Cy Young winner Shane Bieber.

MLB.com's Mark Feinsand reported that the organization is “trying to move” both players as the franchise pivots toward retooling its roster.

Guardians Could Cash In on Kwan's Value

Trading Kwan would be a blockbuster move, as the 27-year-old has been one of Cleveland’s most consistent players since his debut. He’s slashing .286/.351/.410 this season with nine homers, 38 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases.

A three-time Gold Glove winner and two-time All-Star, Kwan has two additional years of arbitration control after 2025, making him a highly coveted asset. Teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers, Toronto Blue Jays, San Diego Padres, Philadelphia Phillies, and Cincinnati Reds have already been linked to him.

Given his elite defense and on-base ability, Cleveland would demand a premium return. While Statcast has him rated league average in Outs Above Average this year, Defensive Runs Saved (+13) still views him as one of MLB’s best left fielders.

Bieber's Market Shapes Up Ahead of Rehab Return

Bieber, 30, is nearing his season debut after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2024. The former AL Cy Young winner has impressed in four minor league rehab starts, logging a 1.59 ERA with seven strikeouts in his latest outing at Double-A Akron.

However, his contract complicates trade talks. Bieber has a $10 million salary this year and holds a $16 million player option for 2026 with a $4 million buyout. Any acquiring team faces the risk that Bieber could either opt in next season if his performance dips or hit free agency if he rebounds.

Still, his track record (a career 3.22 ERA across 843 innings) makes him an attractive option for contenders seeking rotation help.

Deadline Buzz Builds

While Cleveland is just 3.5 games out of a Wild Card spot, the organization may view this as an opportunity to stockpile elite prospects. Expect the Guardians to draw heavy interest right up until Thursday’s 6 p.m. ET deadline.
