MLB Trade Rumors: 5 Teams Linked To Slugger Josh Naylor
He's been named the top position player on the trade market this month as we quickly approach the deadline, now Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Josh Naylor has been linked to five teams.
Insider and former MLB GM Jim Bowden, writing in The Athletic, has submitted these teams who should be all over trying to acquire Naylor for his power profile:
- Seattle Mariners
- Texas Rangers
- Boston Red Sox
- San Francisco Giants
- Cincinnati Reds
The D-Backs want to be buyers at the trade deadline, as they still stand 4.5 games back of a Wild Card berth. Whether they can stay in the race with their ace, Corbin Burnes, out for the season after Tommy John surgery, remains to be seen. The next three weeks will tell the tale. They are one game under .500, at 46-47.
Naylor is having another terrific season, but will be a free agent this coming winter. He's hitting .296 with an .822 OPS with 11 homers and 58 RBIs.
All five aforementioned suitors are in the bottom half of the majors in batting average and OPS from their first basemen. Naylor makes a lot of sense for any of them.
The Giants have already gone all-in with their big swing for Rafael Devers in a trade with the BoSox (though he hasn't quite paid dividends just yet). But he was supposed to be working on making the switch to first base, though he blew off workout sessions there recently with Giants 1B legend Will Clark. Perhaps Naylor can solve that whole conundrum.
The Red Sox, of course, have a first base problem of their own, with Triston Casas out for the year, which ultimately led to the Devers trade after he refused to move to 1B. They still don't have a permanent solution there.
Seattle, Texas & Cincinnati are all in various stages of trying to nab a Wild Card spot, and all could use a slugger like Naylor at the first base bag.
