Revealed: Rafael Devers Blew Off First Base Workouts With Giants Legend
Well, this isn't quite going the way everyone had hoped, to this point. The big trade acquisition of $300 million slugger Rafael Devers hasn't quite paid off just yet for the San Francisco Giants.
They're 9-11 since the trade, and no only is he batting just .234 with a mere two dingers in 21 games since coming over, his attempted conversion to first base hit a bit of a snag a couple of weeks back as well, as it's been revealed that he skipped out on workouts at the bag with Giants legendary first baseman Will Clark—for three days running.
The aborted sessions came three weeks after Devers arrived in The Bay area, promising to give it a shot at first base, after he refused to do so while with Boston earlier this season. And therein lies the extenuating circumstance of his skipped workouts.
Six-time All-Star Will Clark, who won a Gold Glove at first during his eight seasons in San Francisco, reported to the ballpark early on June 20, 21 & 22, ready to give Devers some gold-standard tips on playing the first base bag.
But Devers was a no-show. All weekend long. Clark explains:
Friday, Saturday, Sunday, he did not come out early, at all. Period. Not at all. In fact, he didn't even hit on the field. Everybody's like, 'Oh my God, I'm so sorry, Will. I'm so sorry.'
But Clark wasn't too upset about it in the end. He completely understood. You see, the Red Sox were in town that weekend—the same Red Sox that Devers' flat-out refused to move to first base for.
"I know what the (expletive) happened," Clark revealed on the No Filter Network podcast. "I said, he didn't want to go out and be at first base and be 20 feet in front of their freaking dugout with what went on in Boston, and now he's working with me at first base. He didn't want to have to go through all that (expletive) through the press and the media. So, I completely understand."
However, Clark, while giving Devers a mulligan for that weekend because of the circumstances, had one more message for the Giants DH:
"Rafael Devers: the next time I'm in San Francisco, your ass will be on the field at first base."
