MLB Rumors: Red Sox Eye Twins Ace In Potential Trade Splash

Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan walks off the field during 2025 game.

The Boston Red Sox are reportedly among several teams keeping close tabs on Minnesota Twins starter Joe Ryan ahead of the 2025 MLB trade deadline, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network.

Red Sox Reportedly Targeting Joe Ryan as Trade Deadline Approaches

Ryan, 29, is having a career-best season with a 2.76 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, and 116 strikeouts in 104.1 innings. With ace Garrett Crochet already anchoring the Boston rotation, Ryan would offer a dominant right-handed complement and give the Red Sox one of the league's most dangerous one-two punches.

Twins want a haul to part with their breakout ace

Despite interest from the Red Sox and others, Minnesota is under no pressure to move Ryan. He’s on a team-friendly $3 million salary this season and remains under control through 2027.

Morosi reports that the Twins would only consider trading Ryan if they fall further out of playoff contention and receive an offer that “completely overwhelms” them. That likely rules out a straight-up swap for Jarren Duran, a name floated by some analysts, unless Boston adds elite prospects like Roman Anthony or Marcelo Mayer to sweeten the deal.

Will Boston pay the price for long-term rotation help?

Ryan isn’t just a rental, and that’s what makes him so appealing. For a Red Sox team looking to contend both now and in the seasons ahead, acquiring Ryan would be a statement.

But the cost will be steep.

The Twins reportedly view Ryan as one of the top eight starters in baseball this year, and they’re not entertaining trade talks lightly. With the deadline looming and Boston sitting just one game out of a wild card spot, all eyes will be on Craig Breslow to see if he’s willing to go all-in again.
