Breaking: Seattle Mariners Swing Trade With Pittsburgh Pirates for Bullpen Help

The Pittsburgh Pirates have several relievers on the trade block at this deadline, and the Seattle Mariners have jumped in to snag one. The Bucs are trading seven-year veteran left-hander Caleb Ferguson to Seattle.

Mariners pitching prospect Jeter Martinez is going to Pittsburgh in return.  The 19-year-old right-hander with the terrific baseball name is currently in Low-A ball.

Ferguson isn't the top reliever that the Pirates have up for grabs (David Bednar and Dennis Santana are the top two), but he is a solid lefty with a 3.74 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP in 43.1 innings. He has a career 3.69 ERA over seven seasons, striking out 10.3 batters per nine, though he's down to just 7.1 K/9 this year.

Ferguson has some sneaky good metrics under the hood. He limits hard contact, as he's in the 100th percentile in Hard Hit% % allowed, as well as average exit velo, at just 83.5 mph. He's in the 97th percentile in Barrel% %. He will help the Mariners' bullpen.

This is the second key move for the Mariners at this deadline, as they made a big splash earlier in the week, acquiring Josh Naylor to play first base.

For the Pirates, it's their second move of the day, having already moved on from third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes.
