New York Yankees DFA Former Dominant Pitcher

New York Yankees pitcher Tyler Matzek pitches during 2025 game.

The New York Yankees made a notable bullpen move on Friday, designating veteran left-hander Tyler Matzek for assignment.

The roster decision clears space for the return of right-handed reliever Jonathan Loáisiga, who was reinstated from the 15-day injured list after recovering from UCL surgery.

Matzek, 34, made just seven appearances for the Yankees this season, posting a 4.26 ERA across 6.1 innings. While his ERA was serviceable, a concerning 14.3% walk rate and inconsistent command made him a less reliable option in high-leverage situations. His past success—particularly his dominant stretch with the Atlanta Braves from 2020 to 2022—wasn’t enough to secure a long-term role in New York’s bullpen.

Yankees Shuffle Bullpen Amid Loáisiga’s Return

With Matzek off the roster and headed for waivers, the Yankees welcome back Loáisiga, a key piece of their bullpen when healthy. The right-hander hasn’t pitched in a regular-season game since early 2024 due to a torn UCL, but he impressed during his rehab stint—allowing just one earned run in 7.1 innings with nine strikeouts and no walks.

Loáisiga’s return provides a boost to a Yankees bullpen that currently ranks top-10 in ERA but has seen heavy usage. His ability to induce ground balls and limit walks makes him a valuable late-inning option moving forward.
