Two Twins Starters Throwing Again; Early September Return Expected

This is great news for Minnesota Twins pitching.

Starter Tyler Mahle began a throwing program this week and is expected to throw a bullpen session on Friday.

Starter Josh Winder has begun a minor league rehab assignment.

Mahle has been out since August 18 due to inflammation in his pitching shoulder, however, a recent MRI exam revealed no structural damage. Mahle said he's already starting to feel significantly better.

Assuming all goes well in his recovery, Mahle should be able to return to the Twins rotation sometime at the beginning of September. He's posted a 4.17 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and 126 strikeouts over 118 innings pitched this season.

Josh Winder has begun a minor league rehab assignment. Barring any setbacks, he should be able to return to the Twins roster around the same time as Mahle.

The twenty-five-year-old has been solid for the Twins this season, throwing a 3.77 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 29 strikeouts over 45 innings. He's started six of the 10 games he's appeared in this season, so there is valuable versatility with Winder. It remains to be seen how the Twins will utilize him upon his return.
