But the one big caveat is that there is no extension. 2027 will be the final year of Boone's contract. In other words, he'll be a lame duck manager next season. That rarely goes well. And with the media hounds in New York, you can bet that subject will be raised on more than one occasion to Boone.
In his nine seasons with the Yankees, Boone has a 790-565 record for an excellent .583 wining percentage. However, in the postseason, it's 27-30 (.474). They've made it to the World Series once, and the ALCS twice.
In the Big Apple, it's championship or bust every season. And over the last nine years, it's been all bust for Boone & the Yanks. Their World Series drought is now at 17 years.
However, after they finished 93-68 this season, "There were some in the organization who thought this past regular season was Boone’s finest as a manager," wrote Greg Joyce in the New York Post, "given that the Yankees were missing three-time Aaron Judge for over half the season, in addition to sizable injury absences for Giancarlo Stanton, Cody Bellinger, Max Fried, Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodón and Trent Grisham, among others."
Nevertheless, there are plenty of calls around New York for the manager to go, and for the Yankees to embrace a change. The pressure will be intense on Boone next season (if there is one), so he'll have to hope that Judge is healthy, along with Cole, Rodon and others, if the 2027 campaign is not to be his last in the Bronx.
