4 MLB Powerhouses Linked To Japanese Triple Crown Winner
MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reported in August that the Yankees, Mets, Dodgers, and Phillies have all been linked to the 27-year-old.
A Triple Crown Season In Japan
Sato hit .306/.383/.609 with 39 home runs and 106 RBIs in 143 games this season, leading the Central League in all three Triple Crown categories to become the ninth player in NPB history to do it.
His OPS was .991 with a 196 wRC+, and he drew 68 walks while striking out 164 times in 614 plate appearances.
He won Central League MVP last year with 40 home runs and a .924 OPS, and over six seasons in Japan he has 163 home runs, five seasons of at least 20, and a career .851 OPS.
Teruaki Sato is another very polarizing bat who could be coming over from Japan this winter. In 2026: .306/.383/.609 — 201 wRC+ 39 HR | 40 2B | 106 RBI | 8 SB Has played primarily 3B, though he has experience in the corner OF as well. https://t.co/YqF09HQzSC

Sato has played at least 120 games every year, helped Hanshin win the 2023 Japan Series, and appeared for Japan in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
The concern is the strikeouts, with MLB.com noting he has run a 27 percent strikeout rate over the past two seasons.
MLB.com compared him to Munetaka Murakami, who also won a Triple Crown in Japan and moved from third base to first base with the White Sox, and Murakami hit .207 with 35 home runs and 77 RBIs in his first MLB season.
Four Teams, Four Different Fits
Heyman reported on August 14 that the Mets have been scouting Sato and considering him if he’s posted, likely at first base after Pete Alonso’s departure, with Bo Bichette expected to be at third.
The Yankees are linked as well, and he has been floated as a third-base answer given the uncertainty around Ryan McMahon’s future.
The Phillies or Dodgers could play him at third base and accept the defensive hit, and Sato has 544 games at third base in Japan, along with 262 in the outfield, per Baseball-Reference.
The Hanshin Tigers have officially accepted Teruaki Sato’s posting request. Sato won the 2026 Triple Crown in the NPB, hitting .306 with 39 HR and 106 RBI in his age-27 season. https://t.co/qjtzkpfdxZ

Toronto isn’t part of Heyman’s four, but The Athletic’s Mitch Bannon reported in late September that the Blue Jays will “certainly check in” on Sato.
Because he’s over 25, there are no restrictions on the contract he can sign, and he adds a major bat to a free agent class that’s relatively light on them.
If Sato doesn’t reach a deal within the 45-day window, he returns to Hanshin for 2027 and can’t be posted again until next offseason.
