Rays & Yankees Both Chasing The Same Deadline Upgrade

The New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays have the same problem, and they are both eyeing the same solution.

Per CBS Sports, both AL East rivals are pursuing Minnesota Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers, setting up the possibility of a division bidding war for the best backstop available before the August 3 trade deadline.

Why Both Teams Need Him

The Yankees have gotten historically bad production from the catcher position, with their catchers posting a 42 wRC+ that ranks dead last in baseball, and Austin Wells slashing just .153 with a .483 OPS.

Jim Bowden of The Athletic identified Jeffers as New York's most likely target and noted he would be a good platoon fit with Wells, aided by his existing relationship with Yankees catching coach Tanner Swanson.

The Rays, meanwhile, have been getting modest offense from Nick Fortes and are among the teams reportedly involved, per Ken Rosenthal.

Why Jeffers Is Available

Jeffers has been one of the best-hitting catchers in baseball when healthy, slashing .295/.408/.541 with seven home runs across 37 games before landing on the injured list May 19 with a fractured left hamate bone.

He has begun a rehab assignment at Triple-A and could return before the deadline.

He is an impending free agent unlikely to receive a qualifying offer, which makes it easier for the Twins to trade him even though they sit just a few games back in the AL Central, and backup Victor Caratini has exploded in his absence, giving Minnesota the depth to move him.

ESPN put his chance of being traded at 90 percent.

The Bidding War

The difference between the two suitors may come down to prospect capital.

The Yankees have compelling arms like Elmer Rodriguez, Ben Hess, and Henry Lalane but are unlikely to part with top position players George Lombard Jr. or Dax Kilby for a rental.

The Rays have more levers to pull and deeper prospect capital, which could make them more willing to part with value, though New York's need is more desperate.

With both teams motivated and the market for catching thin, Jeffers looms as one of the most contested names of the deadline, and an AL East rival landing him would sting the loser twice over.
