MLB Trade Rumors: Rangers & Giants Linked To Trade

The San Francisco Giants are heading toward the August 3 trade deadline as one of the clearest sellers in baseball, and Luis Arraez has become a name to watch, with the Texas Rangers repeatedly floated as a logical fit.

Bleacher Report's latest batch of trade ideas proposed the Rangers acquiring Arraez from the Giants for right-hander Leandro Lopez and outfielder Maxton Martin.

Why the Fit Makes Sense

The Rangers have a big hole at second base.

Six different players have started there this season, and while waiver pickup Nicky Lopez has hit surprisingly well, the position has lacked stability as Texas fights for the AL West.

Arraez would be a significant upgrade.

The three-time batting champion is slashing .324/.360/.447 with elite bat-to-ball skills, and his defense has taken a real step forward this season under Giants infield coach Ron Washington, with Arraez posting a 9 outs above average that ranks in the 99th percentile.

He is on an expiring one-year, $12 million deal, making him a rental, but one of the best rental bats available in an underwhelming market.

The Big Picture

Bob Nightengale of USA Today predicted the Giants will trade Arraez despite loving him as a clubhouse presence, writing that they have no plans to keep him beyond the deadline.

Buster Olney of ESPN reported an Arraez trade increasingly appears likely as well.

San Francisco's hands are somewhat tied by the massive contracts of Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, and Matt Chapman, which makes complementary pieces like Arraez the organization's most movable and valuable deadline assets.
