Astros Making Trade Calls On Giants' Logan Webb

The Houston Astros have made their intentions clear ahead of Monday's deadline, and San Francisco Giants right-hander Logan Webb is at the top of their list.

Per Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Astros and other teams keep asking about Webb, and they keep being told he's not going anywhere.

Why Houston Wants Him

The Astros sit at 55-55, just one game back in the AL Wild Card, and general manager Dana Brown has shifted his focus toward starting pitching even after previously naming an outfield bat as the top priority.

Hunter Brown has been solid and Peter Lambert has emerged, but Houston still wants another frontline arm to push past the competition.

Webb is a different kind of target than the typical rental.

The 29-year-old is signed through 2028 on a five-year, $90 million contract, meaning Houston isn't just chasing a two-month rental like Freddy Peralta, Casey Mize, or even Tarik Skubal, but a multi-year piece of the rotation.

Why San Francisco Won't Budge

Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey has been unambiguous.

Asked directly whether the Giants would consider trading Webb, Posey simply said "no," even while acknowledging San Francisco is leaning toward selling elsewhere on the roster.

"I think we'll leave all options on the table," Posey said. "The way things are trending now, I'd say that we've got to remain open to seeing what best ways we can try to improve the club."

Webb has been arguably the best pitcher in the National League this June, rebounding from an early-season knee bursitis stint to post a 3.93 ERA across 19 starts with a 1.12 WHIP.

He last allowed just two earned runs over six innings in his July 29 outing.

What San Francisco Is Actually Selling

While Webb stays put, the Giants are reportedly willing to move other pieces.

San Francisco plans to keep outfielder Jung Hoo Lee but trade Heliot Ramos, and the team is telling teams it will eat part of Robbie Ray's $25 million contract to facilitate a deal for the 2021 Cy Young winner.

Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, and Matt Chapman have also been described as available, with Luis Arraez viewed as an obvious trade candidate.

For Houston, that leaves the door open on secondary Giants targets even as the primary swing keeps getting rejected.
