Four Contenders Circling Same Orioles Outfielder

The Baltimore Orioles are stuck in the middle heading into Monday's deadline, and that ambiguity has turned outfielder Taylor Ward into one of the more sought-after names on the board.

Per Ken Rosenthal and Jayson Stark of The Athletic, the Yankees, Phillies, Rangers, and Guardians are all showing interest in Ward.

Why Baltimore Is Stuck In The Middle

The Orioles sit at 53-56, 2.5 games back of a playoff spot, and president of baseball operations Mike Elias made clear the team isn't picking a lane.

"We put ourselves in a position where we're not declaring ourselves to be in one bucket or another in terms of buying or selling," Elias said. "We can't sink all of our chips into 2026."

Given that stance, Ward becomes attainable even without a full sell-off, since he's a pending free agent who can be moved as part of a buy-sell hybrid approach.

Why Each Team Wants Him

The Yankees currently have Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Cody Bellinger all on the injured list, leaving their outfield thin at the worst possible time.

The Phillies lost Adolis Garcia to season-ending shoulder surgery, and rookie Justin Crawford has disappointed, opening a real need for outfield production.

The Guardians have been chasing outfield help for years, and their group is hitting a combined .234/.304/.357 on the season.

The Rangers are hunting a right-handed bat to platoon with center fielder Evan Carter, with the idea that Wyatt Langford could slide over against lefties while Ward covers left field, even if that role is a bit below his talent level.

The Backstory

Ward's Baltimore tenure traces back to a shocking trade last November, when the Orioles sent Grayson Rodriguez, who was not yet arbitration eligible with four years of control remaining, to the Angels for a single year of Ward.

That swap now looks like it may close one chapter and open another just eight months later.

With four teams in on him and Baltimore in no rush to fully commit to selling, Ward's markets keeps growing more crowded as the deadline approaches.
