Rays & Orioles Linked To Huge Trade
Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report predicted the Rays will trade for Baltimore Orioles outfielder Taylor Ward, calling the fit too obvious to ignore.
Why Ward Fits Tampa Bay
The Rays are getting a league-low 73 wRC+ from left field, an offensive black hole on an otherwise competitive roster.
Ward sits at a 127 wRC+ this season, almost entirely thanks to his knack for getting on base.
"This makes him an ideal Rays hitter," Rymer wrote. "Getting 'em on, over and in is their whole style of offense, so they might as well double down on it in pursuit of the AL East title."

Ward's profile has shifted dramatically from his 2025 breakout, when he slugged a career-best 36 home runs.
Through the first two-plus months of 2026 he has become an on-base machine with limited power, batting .257 with a .389 on-base percentage, five home runs, and 22 RBIs while walking at an 18.8 percent clip.
That still grades as a well above-average bat, and it makes him a viable leadoff hitter for a contender.
The injuries to Tampa Bay outfielders Jonny DeLuca and Jake Fraley, combined with the hollow .265 average and 73 OPS-plus that Chandler Simpson has posted, make adding outfield help an obvious priority.
The Division Tax
Trading within the division is generally a no-no, but Rymer argued the risk is minimal here because Ward is an impending free agent with essentially zero chance of haunting Baltimore in future seasons.
The Orioles, sitting well below .500 and unlikely to challenge for the playoffs, are positioned to sell, and Ward is one of their top trade chips.
A deal would also allow Baltimore to tap into the Rays' deep farm system, with second-ranked prospect Brody Hopkins or right-hander T.J. Nichols floated as the kind of pitching the Orioles could target in return.

The only real question is how aggressively Tampa Bay wants to add, as the Rays are not generally a team that goes all-in.
