Padres' Pitcher Handed Multi-Game Suspension For Beanball On Gunnar Henderson

A wild sequence of events has led to a multi-game suspension for San Diego Padres reliever Ron Marinaccio. He gets three games for hitting Baltimore Orioles' shortstop Gunnar Henderson with a pitch in the 9th inning of a game this past weekend. Henderson was targeted on three separate occasions in the game by two different pitchers before finally getting beaned. And the umpires had seen enough.

The whole thing started after the Padres' Xander Bogaerts got hit in the head with a pitch earlier in the game. Here's how it all went down:

The Orioles, of course, believe the beanball was an act of retaliation. In the fifth inning, Baltimore shortstop Bogaerts was hit in the head by a 93.5 mph sinker on the 93rd pitch of the game from right-hander Trey Gibson. The rookie hurler was struggling with command.

Righty Bradgley Rodriguez came on in the 7th for San Diego, and threw his first two pitches well inside on Henderson, forcing him to dodge out of the way.

It seemed fairly obvious when, the next time Henderson came up, the Padres were successful in plunking him.

Manager Craig Stammen was also ejected and suspended, for one game.

Marinaccio has elected to file an appeal.
