Orioles DFA Reliever After Just 2 Appearances, With 18.00 ERA

It was only six days ago that the Baltimore Orioles signed him. But they've seen enough after just two appearances, and have designated for assignment seven-year veteran reliever Lou Trivino. He posted an 18.00 ERA for them.

Trivino, 34, was released by the Philadelphia Phillies last week off a minor league deal, and picked up by the O's for his "Heavy sinker. Turbo sinker," according to Orioles manager Craig Albernaz at the time of the signing. "I just remember him just attacking hitters no matter what the circumstance was. Obviously, he's had an arm injury since then. I wouldn't say back to his form, but he's healthy and he's back pitching. He's throwing the ball extremely well. The (velocity) is there."

That was after watching the veteran post a 20:4 strikeout to walk ratio and 2.77 ERA at Triple-A for the Phillies across 13 innings.

Things didn't go so well in Baltimore, however. Immediately after being signed, he was inserted into the 8th inning in Baltimore's game against the New York Yankees last Monday, and he proceeded to surrender four hits, three walks and six earned runs in two-thirds of an inning.

He actually recovered and threw two scoreless innings yesterday, with three strikeouts, but it was too late to salvage his spot in the O's bullpen. He was DFA'd on Sunday when they recalled right-hander Jose Espada.

Trivino missed the 2023 and 2024 seasons after Tommy John surgery. He's 24-27 with a 3.87 ERA in 229 relief appearances (and three starts) throughout his seven-year career. He's pitched with the Oakland A's, the NY Yankees, the San Francisco Giants, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Mets.
