4 Red Sox Players Who Will Be DFA'd, Demoted or Dealt
The Boston Red Sox continue to scuffle at the bottom of the AL East standings, and with their 19-27 record, they are third-last in the entire American League. It's time for a shake-up of the roster.
Zachary Rotman of Fansided calls for four Red Sox players to be either DFA'd, demoted or dealt, ASAP.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa
IKF, who is still trying to live down the baserunning blunder that cost the Toronto Blue Jays the World Series last fall, seemed to land on his feet (unlike his unnecessary slide into home plate on that fateful November day), when he signed a $6 million deal to join the Red Sox this past offseason. But Rotman just can't figure that one out.
"In an offseason full of head-scratching decisions, the one that might've raised the most eyebrows was the decision to give Isiah Kiner-Falefa $6 million. Kiner-Falefa has been a fine utility player for much of his career, but $6 million? Why?"
He's hitting .214 with a .505 OPS, only five runs and four RBIs. Why not give a young player a chance to show something in his place? A DFA for IKF could be in the cards.
Ryan Watson
A Rule-5 pick by the BoSox, it just seems like the team is biting off its nose to spite its face by insisting on keeping Watson around, rather than sending him back to the San Francisco Giants. Watson did post a nice three innings in a blowout loss to Atlanta on Sunday, but overall, he has a 5.86 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP in 27.2 innings out of the bullpen.
Greg Weissert
Another right-handed reliever who isn't helping matters much for Boston this season. After excellent 2024 and '25 campaigns, he isn't having the same impact this year. With a 4.96 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP, Rotman figures, "Once (Garrett) Crochet and Danny Coulombe return from the IL within the next couple of weeks, the Red Sox should be willing to part with Weissert instead of relievers who have pitched well for the most part, like Tyler Samaniego, Jovani Moran and Zack Kelly." Weissert can be sent to Triple-A.
Jarren Duran
Obviously, the biggest name on this list, Duran has been absolutely dreadful this season. The 2024 All-Star is batting .183 with a .548 OPS. He was mentioned in trade rumors much of last season and all throughout the winter. But he's still there and still being trotted out to the outfield most days. But it's time to make those trade rumors a reality.
"I get that Boston would be selling remarkably low on a player who is still very talented, but it feels like a deal is for the best of all parties," writes Rotman. "The Red Sox would clear up their logjam (in the OF), while Duran would get a fresh start elsewhere."
