Tigers Hand Out Massive Extension To Breakout Rookie

He came into the 2026 season as the #2 prospect in all of baseball. Kevin McGonigle hasn't disappointed in his first couple of weeks, batting .311 with a .908 OPS for the Detroit Tigers. Now, the team has decided to lock in the highly-touted rookie to an eight-year deal at $150 million.

The contract includes a $14 million signing bonus and performance escalators which could bring it to $160 million. It also has a trade kicker: If McGonigle were to be traded, it would trigger a $5 million assignment bonus for each time his contract is assigned to another MLB organization.

The 21-year-old, with his high-energy attitude, is widely regarded as one of the best pure hitting prospects of the decade.

“Kevin is a special talent and he’s a special person,” president of baseball operations Scott Harris said. “You guys have already seen [it] on the field. He has some rare gifts in the batter's box, but what might be less obvious is he has the grit and the determination to be great, to get the absolute most out of these gifts. He has put in so much time, effort and energy and getting the most out of his gift so far, and we expect that to continue throughout this contract and deep into his career.”
