MLB Trade: Yankees & Astros Swing Deal

The Houston Astros find themselves in need of a little depth on the left side of the infield. To that end, they've acquired slick fielding Braden Shewmake from the New York Yankees.

The 28-year-old shortstop is a former first-round pick in the MLB Draft (2019), but hasn't played in the majors since 2024. Shewmake spent all of last season with the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He batted .244 with 15 stolen bases. He really had no path to playing time in the Bronx, so the Yanks did him a favor sending him to a Houston team that has a couple of injuries to deal with.

The 6'3" Shewmake hasn't hit much in his short cups of coffee in the majors in 2023 and 2024 with other teams, but he certainly proved during Spring Training this year that he can play shortstop with the best of them.

Jeremy Pena is currently out with a hamstring injury for Houston, while Nick Allen is also out of the lineup with a back problem. Does the veteran Shewmake get a chance to make another appearance in The Show for the Astros?

In return, the Yankees acquired 22-year-old righty Wilmy Sanchez. The 5'9", 210-pound fireplug has pitched at Double-A for Houston the past couple of seasons. He's off to a nice start this year, allowing just three hits and one run through 7.1 innings. He can miss bats, as his minor league career 11.8 K/9 can attest.
