Marlins Blossoming Slugger Suffers Devastating Injury

It's been an excellent start to the season for late-booming, big-time power prospect Griffin Conine in Miami with the Marlins. Unfortunately, his long-awaited breakthrough season will be cut short—very short—as he's just been diagnosed with a torn hamstring and will have to undergo surgery.

The 28-year-old will be out for a lengthy period. He suffered the injury in the sixth inning of Thursday's 8-1 home victory against the Cincinnati Reds. He left the game with what was being called "left knee discomfort" after he hit the ground hard on an unsuccessful diving catch attempt.

Conine also had surgery a year ago on his shoulder, which derailed the rest of the 2025 campaign for him as well. He made a valiant attempt to come back right at the end of the season.

The son of former Marlins All-Star and 17-year MLB veteran Jeff Conine, Griffin had started the 2026 season looking like he was finally going to reach his potential, batting .273 with a .950 OPS, a couple of homers, four RBIs and six runs scored in 25 plate appearances.

Conine now joins a full slate of outfielders on the injured list for the Fish, with 2025 All-Star Kyle Stowers yet to make his season debut, while former AL stolen base leader Esteury Ruiz is out for another month with an oblique injury.
