Brewers Acquire Flamethrower From Diamondbacks

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Junior Fernandez pitches during 2024 game.

The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired right-hander Junior Fernandez from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for cash considerations.

Fernandez, 29, has been assigned to Triple-A Nashville, where he will attempt to rebuild his value and work his way back to the major leagues.

Fernandez signed a minor league deal with Arizona in the offseason, got an invite to big league camp, struggled in four Cactus League appearances, and never threw a pitch in an official minor league game for the Reno Aces.

He was placed on the development list on March 27 and had been sitting there ever since. Arizona effectively had nothing left to gain by keeping him around, and Milwaukee stepped in to pick up a live arm at minimal cost.

A Familiar Pattern for Milwaukee

The Brewers have built a well-earned reputation for taking on exactly this kind of player. An arm with electric stuff, a rocky track record, and a question mark over his ability to harness it all.

Fernandez fits that profile almost perfectly. His four-seam fastball averaged over 98 miles per hour in his most recent big league action, and his sinker sat even higher. In Triple-A action last season between the Royals and Mets organizations, he posted a 36.5 percent whiff rate and a strikeout rate approaching 30 percent.

Those are numbers that pitching development staffs pay close attention to. The problem has always been the same one that has followed him throughout his career. He walked 13.9 percent of big league batters he has faced, and his minor league walk rate last season hovered around 14 percent as well.

Command is the issue. The stuff has never been in question.

What He Has Left to Prove

Fernandez made his major league debut with the Cardinals back in 2019 and bounced around the big leagues through 2022, logging 54 innings with a 5.17 ERA across stints with St. Louis and Pittsburgh.

His best season came in 2022, when he posted a 2.93 ERA in 13 appearances with the Cardinals before getting designated for assignment, then did not allow an earned run in three outings with Pittsburgh.

He has not appeared in a major league game since. The years since have included stops in the Blue Jays, Nationals, Royals, Mets, and Diamondbacks organizations, plus an injury-shortened stint in the Japanese minor leagues in 2024.

He is out of options, which means if and when the Brewers promote him, he cannot be sent back down without going through waivers.

If Fernandez finds his command in Nashville, he could be a legitimate bullpen piece by midseason. If he does not, the price paid amounts to a small check and a roster slot at the Triple-A level.
