Chicago White Sox Sign 8-Year Veteran Catcher

Chicago Cubs catcher Reese McGuire scores a run during 2025 game.

The Chicago White Sox made one of the more surprising late spring moves, bringing back catcher Reese McGuire on a one-year, $1.2 million deal just days before Opening Day.

It came together quickly after McGuire was released by the Milwaukee Brewers.

White Sox sign Reese McGuire to shake up catching depth

McGuire, 31, is not a flashy addition, but he checks a few boxes the White Sox clearly prioritized.

He is a left-handed hitter, something the roster lacked behind the plate, and he brings experience handling a pitching staff.

Last season with the Chicago Cubs, he hit .226 with nine home runs and 24 RBIs in 45 games, showing a bit more power than earlier in his career.

Over a longer sample, he’s a .248 hitter with 25 home runs and a respectable 27.1 percent caught-stealing rate.

There is also some familiarity here.

McGuire spent part of the 2022 season with the White Sox, so this is not a completely new environment for him.

The addition of McGuire puts Korey Lee’s roster spot in serious jeopardy, even after a strong spring.

Lee had been expected to factor into the Opening Day mix, especially with Kyle Teel dealing with a hamstring injury, but the White Sox ultimately decided they preferred McGuire’s left-handed bat and veteran profile.

That leaves Edgar Quero as the only real constant in the group, with Teel expected back at some point and Lee now likely on the outside looking in.

Chicago could briefly carry three catchers, but that is rarely a long-term solution, and more moves could be coming once Teel is fully healthy.
