6-Time All-Star JD Martinez Returns to Familiar Team

38-year-old JD Martinez hasn't played in the majors since 2024. And if his new gig is any indication, he might not be ever again. The New York Mets have brought back the longtime veteran DH to be a special advisor in baseball operations.

Martinez played a key role in the 2024 Mets run to the NLCS, providing key veteran leadership, on and off the field.

In his new role, he'll do much of the same, mentoring current Mets players, both on the field and in the clubhouse, bringing his 14 years and 1,642 games of experience. It's the same role that Carlos Beltran has in Queens as well.

A six-time All-Star and three-time Silver Slugger winner, Martinez has not officially announced his retirement. But he has not suited up since the 2024 season with the Mets. In 120 games that year, he batted .235 with 16 home runs and a .725 OPS. But it was his leadership in the clubhouse that was his biggest contribution to the team that made an unexpected postseason run, and came within two games of the NL pennant.

His best season, in every season of the word, came back in 2018 with the Boston Red Sox, when he launched 43 homers with a major league best 130 RBIs. He batted a career-high .330 with a 1.041 OPS and finished 4th in MVP voting. He led the BoSox to the World Series championship, batting .300 in the postseason with 14 RBIs in 14 games.

Over the course of his career, he batted .283 with 331 home runs and an .863 OPS. He spent time with the Houston AstrosDetroit TigersArizona Diamondbacks, Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Mets.
