Red Sox Sign Former 3rd Overall Pick & Gold Glover
Red Sox Brendan Rodgers deal adds infield depth
Rodgers, 29, is still only a few years removed from being a legit everyday piece with the Colorado Rockies, and his glove is the calling card.
Rodgers was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2015 draft and showed flashes in Colorado, but his 2025 season with the Houston Astros went sideways, limited to 43 games while he hit .191/.266/.278 before injuries ended his year early.

He won the National League Gold Glove at second base in 2022, and Boston clearly sees value in piling up capable defenders as the roster math at second base and third base stays fluid.
Brendan Rodgers stats and what Boston is betting on
The bat is the big question after his rough 2025 season.
Prior to that, however, he posted a solid .266/.316/.409 triple-slash line, with 45 home runs, 197 RBIs, one stolen base, and a 5.9 WAR across 452 games and six seasons with the Rockies. Of course, the hitter-friendly environment in Colorado wouldn't have hurt those number either.

“Brendan Rodgers isn’t a bounce-back bat — he’s a defensive stabilizer. The 2022 Gold Glove reflects range efficiency, footwork consistency, and run-prevention value that doesn’t show up in slash lines. Paired with IKF, this is about… pic.twitter.com/5HfeEn9zOG
If he shows anything close to his better stretches and pairs it with that Gold Glove defense, he can absolutely force his way into Boston’s mix as more than just emergency depth.
