Former Dodgers All-Star Facing 15 Years in Prison

He hasn't played in the majors in six years, but Yasiel Puig was once an All-Star outfielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He's now facing up to 15 years in prison after being found guilty of lying to investigators in a gambling scandal.

A federal jury found Puig guilty of obstruction of justice and lying to federal agents in an illegal sports gambling probe.

He was accused of placing nearly 1,000 illegal bets in 2019 on tennis, football and basketball games (no baseball), but then, according to the DOJ, Puig lied repeatedly during a 2022 interview about his bets with the illegal bookmaking operation.

Evidence showed he racked up nearly $1M in unpaid losses, often placing wagers from ballparks.

Per prosecutors, Puig faces up to 15 years in prison: 10 years for the obstruction of justice charge and an additional five years for the false statement charge. The sentencing will take place on May 26.

His attorney called the verdict shocking and plans post-trial motions.

The Cuban-born Puig was a well-above-average hitter overall in his seven big league seasons from 2013 to 2019, finishing with a 122 OPS+. He has a .277/.348/.475 slash line, with an .823 OPS. He was a regular 20/15 man in his last three years (20+ homers, 15+ stolen bases).
