Significant Update on Ketel Marte Trade Talks

Ketel Marte has been one of the biggest names on the trade market this offseason. The superstar second baseman would have brought the Arizona Diamondbacks a huge haul in return, as many teams were clamouring to get him. But it's official now, per insiders Ken Rosenthal and Jon Heyman: Marte is OFF the market. The D-Backs will NOT be trading him.

With a six year, $116.5 million extension signed just last April that kicks in this year, the Snakes are making a bold commitment here, as Marte becomes a 10-and-5 player as of the start of the 2026 campaign, meaning he will gain full no-trade rights.

Limited payroll space forced the D-Backs to consider trading their three-time All-Star this offseason, and many thought that a trade of Marte would be a prerequisite for the team being able to make a competitive offer for free agent Alex Bregman.

Bot both Heyman and Rosenthal are reporting that the team has not closed the door just yet on Bregman.

Nevertheless, it's safe to assume that this news of Marte staying put in the desert means that the Boston Red Sox's chances of re-signing Bregman have gone up somewhat.

Three other teams that were interested in a Marte trade have moved on to other options, with the Toronto Blue Jays signing Japanese third baseman Kazuma Okamoto, the Pittsburgh Pirates trading for Brandon Lowe, and the Philadelphia Phillies focusing on free agent Bo Bichette.

But for teams still looking for a solution at second base, there are some other big names that have been on the trade market this winter in varying degrees, including the St. Louis Cardinals' Brendan Donovan, the Chicago Cubs’ Nico Hoerner and the NY Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm Jr.
